It sounded like more of an invitation than it was meant to be. Did Miyeon not realize that it felt almost like she was taunting her? Maybe the younger woman just hadn’t caught on to the reality of what had gone down that night on the balcony. Or maybe Sooyeon just hadn’t done a good job at pretending it hadn’t happened like she probably should have. There was no need for things to change if they could just play pretend, instead.
But that was harder said than done. Sooyeon looked to the empty spot in the bed. She could lie down with her for the night, nothing to be thought of it. No need for complications. There was enough room to stay separate, enough space to keep from making Miyeon uncomfortable with her presence. But Miyeon wasn’t the one who seemed uncomfortable. It had been a week, and the younger woman’s demeanor had hardly changed towards her. It was all Sooyeon. Everything that had happened, the distance between them now- it was all because of Sooyeon. “I thought it would be better if I slept on the couch.” She answered back, voice slightly timid. Just over a week ago this same request of Miyeon’s would have been met without hesitation. Things were so much easier when there was no need for hesitation…
Despite her words, Sooyeon took a few hesitant steps closer. The next few were more resolved. Things didn’t have to be different just because she’d made a mistake. Serri still seemed to enjoy her company. She hadn’t abandoned her or asked for space. She hadn’t questioned Sooyeon’s intentions that night. She hadn’t brought it up at all, actually. That was a good sign, right? Things could be completely normal again if Sooyeon just tried. Moved on. Left it in the past.
She slipped beneath the covers, the soft cotton of the sheets brushing against her exposed legs. Don’t think about it. It could be as simple as that, right? Don’t think about it. She could lie down beside her. Keep her hands to herself. Keep her thoughts to herself. Don’t think about it. She could close her eyes, pretend she was alone. But even with her eyes closed, she could still hear Miyeon breathing. She could still feel the warmth from her body, only inches away. And when she opened her eyes, Miyeon would be there. Don’t think about it. But not thinking about it was much harder than she’d hoped.

“Don’t worry. It’s nothing.” She assured the woman. This happened all the time. It was sincerely nothing to be concerned about, though. Just anxiety. She’d only just finished out her concert, and all the anxiety that she’d had to keep bottled up before and during the performance tended to overwhelm her at the end. She was trembling, yes, but it was from a mix of nerves and adrenaline. It was fine. This was probably normal, right? I happened almost every time. She sat down beside Miyeon, leaving a couple feet between them, “I just need a second and I’ll be fine.”
Something had seemed… off. Seunghyun wasn’t sure exactly how to place the sensation, but there was something wrong. Specifically, Miran didn’t seem quite herself. Yes, she was doing things as she usually did, speaking as she usually did, but it felt like an act. He waited all morning for her to tell him what was wrong, if there was anything wrong. But nothing. Not a word of it. Maybe he’d just been imagining things?
It wasn’t until around 11:00am as he was about to leave for work that his previous suspicions were (sort of) confirmed. He hoisted his gym bag over his shoulder, kissed her goodbye. But before his hand could even touch the doorknob leading out, Miran was calling out to him, her voice quieter than it should be. A request for him to stay, bordering on a plea. Without hesitation, he dropped the bag by the door and made his way over to her. In a minute he would call in, cancel classes for the day. Maybe they could find someone to substitute for him. What mattered was being here with Miran. Whatever this was about, he wanted to know. “Talk to me. Please.”
